Our aim is to offer relevant, up-to-date and research-informed computing and information systems education, at the time and place convenient for every student. SCIS faculty integrate research in distance education technology with course development and delivery. Our students' learning experiences and feedback are essential to course development and revision.

We are dedicated to scholarship and committed to building and sustaining a mutually supportive learning community. This is characterized by caring and respectful relationships within the school among all of our staff, all of our students and with external stakeholders.

Our vision

Within 10 years, SCIS will become one of the most significant and acclaimed higher education computing departments in the world, innovating in both research and online learning.

Learning with SCIS will be even more personal, adaptive and flexible. Our courses and programs will better adjust to and cater to a growing number of ever more diverse students from around the globe with ever more diverse needs and backgrounds. We will adapt with an ever-increasing diversity of high-quality, innovative and cutting-edge programs, courses, technologies and pedagogies. Our students will enjoy ever-greater freedom of choice over the place, time, pace, level of engagement and content of their learning. They will continue to be among the most employable and rapidly progressing students in the sector. Our teaching will continue to both inform and be informed by partners in industry as well as research.

We will continue to be internationally respected for our research excellence, attracting high quality faculty and research staff who are at the forefront of their fields. Program name change

Advanced Education and Technology has approved our proposal to align our program nomenclature with other Alberta post-secondary institutions by changing the name of the existing Master of Science in Information Systems to Master of Science with a specialization in Information Systems effective July 1, 2010. Students who have been admitted into the program effective September 1, 2010 and later will have the new name on their transcript when they graduate from the program.

Call for participation: Undergraduate Capstone Open Source Projects

Since September 2008, undergraduates from several universities in Canada and the US have been taking part in joint capstone projects in order to learn first-hand what distributed development is like. Each student registers in a project course at his or her home institution; students are then put in teams of 4-6 that span several schools to get some hands-on experience with the working practices used in distributed teams.

SCIS Sadly Announces Death of SCIS Professor, Dr. Peter Holt

It is with great sadness that we announce the tragic death of our long-term SCIS professor, Dr. Peter Holt in a motor vehicle accident on Saturday, Nov 21, 2009. He will be greatly missed by his colleagues in the School of Computing and Information Systems, as well as the entire university. We extend our condolences to Pete's family and his many friends. Students being tutored by Dr. Holt will be notified of alternative arrangements for their courses.
